A still from ‘Homer’s Crossing’ Photo: FoxThirty-five years ago, which can’t possibly be true, cartoonist Matt Groening was making the rounds of news outlets in New York, hawking his new, prime-time animated series. He was fairly well-known already—his comic-strip “Life in Hell” was a mainstay of the alternative weeklies (newspaper-like publications, FYI) and had gotten the attention of producer James L. Brooks , who drafted Mr. Groening to make “bumpers” to fill gaps between skits on “The Tracey Ullman Show.” Now, the cartoon family created by the very likable and unassuming cartoonist would be getting their own half-hour on Fox.

If “Futurama” were a person, you could imagine it saying “Doh” when it returns after 10 years and “The Simpsons,” the show in whose shadow it has always resided, is still around. The new season picks up in the next moment, with both fictional time and the actual show rebooted. If you haven’t watched the show before, you won’t know what you’re missing, but you probably will be aware that you’re missing something and that this is a problem. A greater concern is that a little of the zip has gone out of the writing and the overall comic conceptualism. Episodes aimed at big, easy targets like Bitcoin and Amazon feel routine, no matter how many opportunities they provide for making connections to the show’s past.

X-59: NASA’s ‘quiet’ supersonic plane revealed

CNN —If you’ve heard a sonic boom recently, you probably remember it. Now, NASA is working to change those regulations by transforming the boom into a “thump,” paving the way for a new generation of quieter supersonic aircraft. It’s set to take off for the first time later this year, ahead of its first quiet supersonic flight. “It will be significantly quieter than Concorde or any other supersonic aircraft that exist today,” Craig Nickol, senior adviser at NASA Headquarters, told CNN in 2022. However, it’s doubtful that any of them will be able to take advantage of the findings of the Quesst program, which will likely inform the next generation of supersonic aircraft.

Crying on airplanes: Do we tear up more when we fly?

If you’re traveling solo, you’re locked inside a small space with a group of strangers for the duration of your flight. So what can you do if you feel emotional when you fly? Self-regulate what you are watching or listening to, and avoid media that would normally make you feel emotional, De Luca suggests. That’s easier than ever – and may even change how often crying while flying happens. “Crying by yourself isn’t memorable to you the way crying on a plane is,” said Groening.
